NAPA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT - DESIGN PRINCIPLES, COMMUNITY BUILDING
How might we create a set of design principles
that creates a learning experience that offers
every student the opportunity to thrive?
Napa Unified School District was looking to co-design with community stakeholders a cohesive vision for comprehensive middle schools. They needed a key set of design principles and agreements that bring ‘coherence and alignment across their system,’ so they collaborated with Design for Emergence. This experience launched with a two day Design Drive to co-create design principles and to really uncover what matters most to our students and families. Then we activated those principles by prototyping within those guidelines. In order to tend to the transitions and closures happening in their district and need for a humanized experience, D4E also worked with NVUSD to Design for Belonging for both adults and students as they navigate big changes.
“I used to think that the redesign process would be loaded with a lot of emotional “baggage” from stakeholders. But now I think that we have a group that will be able to put the past behind us and move forward in a positive way.”
