D4E HIVE DESIGNER

During his career, Paul has taught students of all ages, from kindergarten to college. He began transforming his teaching practices with design thinking a dozen years ago. This eventually led him to found a self-directed learning lab for high school students who want to develop an idea that they believe is worth sharing in the world. It also led to work with the Teachers Guild, OpenIDEO, the d.school at Stanford, and Transcend Education.

Motivated by a bias toward action inherited from his immigrant parents, Paul has been involved in various local and national initiatives to further global perspectives and equity in education. He co-founded two businesses with former students, including a non-profit children’s book publishing company. He has also served as a member of two charter school boards.

Paul finds inspiration for his design work when he is with his wife exploring cities somewhere in the world, entertaining at their home in San Antonio, Texas, or collecting uncommon objects and ephemera. Otherwise, he leans on the knowledge within books and golf courses to gain insight into existing systems issues because people revert to default beliefs and behaviors.
